What's New

Your Local utility provider together with the OPA (Ontario Power Authority) and the Provincial Government has begun a program that will make residential and business owners solar power generators. It requires that the generator (home or business owner) enter into contract with the OPA for a period of 20 years. The electrical energy produced by solar panels can then be sold at a guaranteed rate of 80.2 cents per KWH for the entire length of the contract. This allows the generator to obtain financing and have assurance to recover not only the initial cost of the system but also to make some money in the process.

Using very high quality equipment such as Sharp solar panels with a 25 year warranty (and making panels for over 40 years) and Xantrex, Sunny Boy (SMA America) and Fronius inverters with a 10 year warranty and proven track records of excellence in the industry is the surest way to maximize profits over the term of the contract. Thermomax has revolutionized the solar energy industry by perfecting a solar collector that, on an annual basis, is two to three times more efficient than familiar flat-plate collector systems and 15% more efficient and much higher quality than double-walled tubes from Asia.You can simply get more energy from smaller absorber areas than any other collector on the market.

Thermomax Collectors do not necessarily need direct sunlight to operate due to the most efficient vacuum insulation in the industry (10-5 Mbar). They let the sun supply you with up to 100% of your annual hot water and heating requirements—free year-after-year. Vacuum is the major reason why evacuated tubes make the best collectors. This vacuum creates an insulation not only keeping the cold and wind out but also any heat energy absorbed by the specially coated collector plate is not allowed to escape. The heat on the collector plate is transferred to a tube containing a few drops of liquid. Because it is in a vacuum this liquid boils at a much lower than normal temperature, rises up the tube and passes off its heat to the 'bulb' at the top of the collector tube.The liquid condenses and then returns to the bottom, and the process repeats itself. The 'bulb' is inserted in a manifold and the heat is transferred to a glycol solution through a dry connection. The glycol solution is circulated whenever it is hot enough, from the collector to a heat exchanger, and is transferred to your hot water tank. The cooled glycol is then circulated back to the collector manifold to be heated again. . .

Once you are making Solar hot water there are many uses whether it is just for your domestic hot water or it is being used to supplement radiant heating, or free pool heating or hot water for your hot tub!

Thermomax also has two controllers. The Smt100 is a basic controller that will control circulating pump operation automatically. It is very easy to program and install. The Smt400 is an upgraded controller with easy to read displays of temperature sensors, datalogger function and graphing functions. It can also control two additional pumps and three relays making it extremely versatile not to mention the hours of entertainment for the technical junkie in the family.

The pump station is a modular unit that incorporates the pump, shut off and isolation valves, fill and flush ports, air trap, expansion tank connection, safety valve, flow meter and flow control valve, all in one compact insulated case. This makes for an easier, neater install and it is attractive enough to be installed almost anywhere.

Glossary of Homegrown Energy terms

DHW -- Domestic Hot Water, Basically any water in your home that is safe to drink that has been heated for cleaning or bathing.

SOLAR HOT WATER -- Using the energy from the sun to heat water.

SDHW -- Solar Domestic Hot Water

CLOSED LOOP SYSTEM -- In colder climates, because a portion of the SDHW sytem is exposed to below freezing temperatures, the collector must be filled with an antifreeze solution. The heat from the collector portion of the system must pass on this heat through a heat exchanger but the antifreeze never mixes with the DHW.
